Comparing IEC and WECC Generic Dynamic Models for Type 4 Wind Turbines

To ensure the system stability with a large penetration of power-electronics based components, it is crucial that Transmission System Operators have access to high-quality, transparent and widely accessible dynamic models to conduct proper large-scale studies. One possible approach is to use generic models providing a modular structure that can be used to represent a diverse range of installations through an appropriate tuning of the parameters. This paper presents a complete comparison of the two mostly used generic models, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and the Western Electric Coordinating Council. It clearly explains both the common functionalities and the existing differences between the models, providing important insights on their validity domain. This analysis also conducts to identify open questions on the models implementation that would deserve further clarifications to ensure a shared understanding of the models structure and similar behaviors in different tools.
